The UK standardisation of new versions of CELF and CELF Preschool
In 2004, on behalf of Pearson Assessment, The Psychometrics Centre conducted an anglicisation and UK standardisation of the 4th Revision of the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals (CELF-IV) and of the 2nd Edition of CELF Preschool, both widely used tests of language abilities for children between the ages of 3 and 16 years. The project involved the administration of the tests to 1400 children within this age range across the UK. The tests were administered by Speech and Language Therapists and by Educational Psychologists in over 100 day nurseries, schools and colleges throughout the UK. Data collection was completed in May 2005.
CELF-IV (UK)
CELF-IV(UK) is an individually administered clinical tool for the identification, diagnosis, and follow-up evaluation of language skill deficits in school-age children, adolescents, and young adults. It was designed to identify individuals aged from 6 years to 21 years who lack the basic foundations of content and form that characterise mature language use: word meanings (semantics), word and sentence structure (morphology and syntax), as well as the recall and retrieval of spoken language (memory).
You can use CELF-IV norms as a quantitative support for determining a child's eligibility for services, classification, and follow-up decisions. You can alo determine children's strengths and weaknesses in specific language content and forms by analysing performance on a variety of language measures. You can design extension tests, specify educational objectives, and plan overall intervention programmes by analysing a child's performance, using each of the subtest tables.
CELF-IV contains the subtests of:
- Sentence Structure
- Word Structure
- Concepts and Directions
- Formulated Sentences
- Word Classes
- Recalling Sentences
- Sentence Assembly
- Semantic Relationships
- Word Associations
- Listening to Paragraphs
- Rapid Autonomic Naming
that appeared in CELF-III, as well as additional subtests of
- Expressive Vocabulary

- Familiar Sequences
- Pragmatic Profile.
CELF Preschool-II (UK)
CELF-Preschool-II is a practical and efficient clinical tool for identifying, diagnosing, and performance follow-up evaluations of language deficits in children ages 3 to 6 years. It is an individually administered test that can be used by speech and language therapists, educational psychologists, special needs educators and diagnosticians who have been trained and are experienced in the administration and interpretation of standardised tests.
CELF- Preschool-II provides a flexible, multi-perspective assessment process for pinpointing a child's language and communication strengths and weaknesses, and for making relevant recommendations for intervention and accommodation. CELF Preschool 2 contains subtests of:
- Sentence Structure
- Word Structure
- Expressive Vocabulary
